Welcome to day 18 of our 7th grade ELA year.  Today we will continue with MAPS testing.

Many of you will finish our tests early.  Because of this, it’s a great time to get caught up with work that is missing.  The following are things you should get turned in by Friday if you want credit.

  1. You should have 2 reading logs turned in
  2. Elements of Story (for the Factory)

I also want to get you into the library for STAR testing.  Be ready for that.

Welcome to day 16 of your 7th grade ELA class.  Friday, we took a test that took far longer than I expected.  This week we will make up that time.

MAPS TESTING TODAY

A couple classes still need to present their quotes.

Everyone will turn their quotes in today for credit.  You must have 5, and each must be supported by your own opinions.

Reading Logs are also due today.  Make sure your reading log is complete.

This week we will focus on writing.  We will be taking notes, watching videos, and practicing creating introductory paragraphs, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraphs.  We will be using ICE and STEP UP TO WRITING strategies.

This should be a very busy, but rewarding week.

Our Lessons

082616 – Friday – Day 15

Welcome to day 15 of 7th grade ELA.  Today we will finish sharing out quotes with the class.  We will continue taking notes on using quotes in our writing.  We will watch a couple videos on this same topic, and if time allows, we will begin practicing using quotes correctly.

Remember, this will be the most difficult part of this unit.  It will require each of us to focus as hard as we can.  The quicker we each learn how to write effective paragraphs, the sooner we can move on to something news.

Today we will also take a pop quiz on our Daily Starters.  This will be Daily Starter Test #2.  It is worth 14 test points.

Due Monday are your reading logs and the 5 quotations you were working on in your groups.  Each student must present 5 quotations / explanatory commentary.

082516 – Thursday – Day 14

0630161925a_HDR-01

Welcome to day 14 of our 7th Grade ELA class.  We’ve been working on the short story “The Factory.”  Our work has been aimed at learning how to read a story with better comprehension, how to make powerful inferences when we read, and how to find evidence to support the opinions we form as we read text.  We are slowly moving toward using these skills in order to write a strong opinion-based essay.

Today, we will continue in our groups.  Group members will present their work to the class.  When we are done presenting, we will take notes, and then begin looking at how we should introduce and talk about our quotes effectively.  We are each going to be good writers.  That is our goal.

Today’s work.

082416 – Wednesday – Day 13

0630161046a_HDR-01

Welcome to day 13 of 7th Grade ELA.  We’ve been working on developing the ability to read text more closely.  Using “The Factory” as our text, we will continue doing this as we also begin the process of writing.  We will use our work from the previous few days to begin our first writing assignment.

Ah Oh!  Many student either forgot, or simply didn’t turn in their reading logs on Monday.  Today (and for the rest of the week), those students will be calling home to explain to their parents why they didn’t get their work done.

Can you believe it we’ve actually finished our 2nd week together?  So far, I’m pretty impressed with almost every one of you.  You’ve worked hard, have been a lot of fun, and have really shown me that you want to learn.  I think this is going to be a great year, but we can’t start slacking now.

Today we will take a short test on our daily starters.  Some classes will continue with our work on “Snow.”  Other classes will be moving forward to our new story, “The Factory.”  With this new story, we will begin take a much closer look at characters.  We will also continue focusing on the other elements of story too.

Don’t forget, we will start using our composition books on Monday.  Make sure you have yours by then.  Thanks!

Let’s go!

0630161957-01

Welcome to day 9 of 7th grade ELA.  Most of you have been doing a great job of internalizing the rules and procedures for our class.  We will continue to review and work on these rules throughout the year.

Today we will continue looking at theme.  We will do this by completing our assignment from yesterday.  We will read one more story, and you will be responsible for discussing the elements of that story completely (using your newly gained knowledge and notes).

You will begin writing a short essay on that story.  This will be collected next week.  This will serve as your first writing assignment, and will be used to guide our writing instruction in the coming weeks.
