013117 – Tuesday – Day 107

Well, today some of you very lucky students are going to be staying with me after school to watch Dr. Who: The Aliens of London.  Get ready to laugh, to cry, and to shiver with fear.

No Chromebooks today

Yesterday, every class was working so hard.  Honestly, I was really proud.  Because of that, I’ve decided to slow things down quite a bit for the day.  Today, you will review the elements of a story.  You will do this by watching an episode of the Twilight Zone.  As you watch, you will take a short test.  This test will let you and me know how well you remember the elements of plot.  Turn this in to the sub at the end of class.

  1. First, you will do your Daily Starters.  You will do this on paper.  Please turn it in to the sub before class is over.  Remember, there are 2 sentences that do not belong in the paragraph below.  Find them, and then explain why you would delete them.  The sub may go over this with you when you are done.
  2. You will watch an episode of the Twilight Zone.  As you watch, you will complete the plot map, demonstrating that you remember the elements of plot.  Turn this in at the end of the period.  For credit, this test must be complete.

013017 – Monday – Day 106

Happy Monday!  This should be a good week for all of us.  There’s lost of interesting things to do.  We will definitely get back to ERWC this week, which means you will likely be working with partners or in groups.  I’d like to get all our work caught up so that on Friday we can have some fun.

Just a note, I will be working as an administrator tomorrow.  Make sure you do will with the sub.  I will be hosting Dr. Who tomorrow after school.

Daily Starters can be found in google Classroom.

012617 – Thursday – Day 104

I’m really sorry that I’m still sick.  I was hoping that I’d be better by today.

Today I’d like for you to complete your daily starter.  We are still working on using dialogue correctly.  We will also be looking at writing a short story.  I expect you to be on your best behavior for the sub, and I should be back in class tomorrow.  I’d like to get a great class report for each of you.

We will not be using the Chromebooks today, everything should be done by hand on paper.  Please turn your work in to the sub at the end of the period so that I can get it into the Grade book.

  1. Daily Starters:

Rewrite the paragraph above so that it uses dialogue correctly.

2. Read “Writing a Short Story” and “The No-Guitar Blues” starting on page 536.  Also read Using Narrative Strategies on page 545.  Complete the practice assignment on the bottom.  This assignment requires you to rewrite a passage. Make sure you add dialogue and sensory details in order to make that paragraph better.

If you finish everything, make sure all this week’s work is complete, including yesterday’s assignment.

012517 – Wednesday – Day 103

Advisory, you will watch the daily announcements today.

Periods 1-5

Sorry, I got sick this morning.  Today you will be with a sub, and I expect you to be on your best behavior.  You will do all of your work on paper today.  You will start with our daily starters.

Period 1 will start by reading for 9 minutes.

Daily Starter: Read the paragraph above carefully. Where ever possible, use dialogue to make the paragraph better. (you can also access this on our daily slideshow…it may be easier to read there.)

Everyone will read After Twenty Years on page 225 of our textbook.  You will answer questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9.  Turn your work in to the sub at the end of the period.

For those of you who didn’t finish the work from our last story, Amigo Brothers, that is also due.  I will need that for the grade-book soon.

If you finish all your work early, many of you have missing assignments to make up, including reading logs.  This would be a great chance to work quietly on that.

___________________________________________________

Welcome to Wednesday.    Today I need your Frayer Models, your Reading Logs, and we will continue with ERWC.  Before that, though, we have to continue working on our ability to use dialogue.  You will do this in your daily starters.  You can access these in Google Classroom.  I’ve included some videos about dialogue to help you out.

There is also another new assignment in Classroom.  In this assignment, you are required to watch a video and take notes.  You will be graded on the notes.  I’ve set up a Cornell notes page for you there.  You will do this on your own by Monday.

011917 – Thursday – Day 99

Play this video first

Well, there I was in 6th period grading papers when suddenly, I got an email saying I have to go to a training today.  I’ll be at the district office all day.

I’m pretty sad about this, and for those of you still testing, I’m especially sad.  But, don’t worry, we can still test on Friday.  That does throw off our plans for tomorrow, but don’t worry about that either.  We will just move the plans to Monday.

The Dr. Who permission slips are at the back of the class.  I’d love to see a lot of you here tomorrow to watch Season 1, Episode 3.  Bring snacks and lets hang out! You can also download the permission slip at this link: Dr. Who End of the Week Geek Out

Today, you will need one sheet of paper and something to write with.  You will complete our daily starters on this sheet of paper.  You will use this sheet of paper to complete our daily starters:

And then you will read Amigo Brothers on page 309 of our text book.

Feel free to watch this video first.

You will then answer question #4 on page 318.

011817 – Wednesday – Day 98

I have to admit, my classes were incredible yesterday.  We had students taking their MAPS tests and almost every single one of you did exactly what you should have done.  This allowed your classmates  to do their best.  You were good people, and I thank you.

Today, we will have a few more people doing MAPS make up tests.  That means the rest of us have to be on our best behavior again so that these students have a fair chance to do well.  Because some students will be completing their tests, the rest of us will work on our Frayer Models, our vocabulary tests, and our daily starters.  You may do any of this, but you may not disturb those who are doing make-up tests.  Today we will begin with:

  1. Daily Starters (Today, illuminate Test Practice on Dialogue in Google Classroom).  Remember, this is important because you will be asked to do this on our next big tests.  I’ve added a new version of our daily starters.  Make sure you copy and paste yesterday’s work onto this, as I will start going through your work today.
  2. This Week’s Vocabulary, Frayer Models (remember, if you can’t print these, you should do them on paper).
  3. Week 20 Vocabulary Test | Honors Week 20 Vocab Test
  4. ERWC – (Celebrities) using Google Classroom
    1. Quick-write on Google Classroom (Did you turn it in?)
    2. Celebrities Vocabulary (Did you turn it in?)
    3. The Impact of Celebrities Activity #2 (in Classroom)
    4. Survey
    5. Discussion of the results (Using Google Classroom)
    6. Read the text” The Impact Celebrities Have on Our Lives” (using Google Classroom).  We will begin by looking at the author’s background.  We will then examine the overall text.  Finally, we will begin reading and marking up the text (if you need to review this video, you will need headphones).
    7. Complete any missing work from last week.
    8. Read in order to get your reading logs done.
